For the Biosemana 2013, our guest was Prof. Dr. Adrian Monjeau, whom pronounced the Closing Lecture of Biosemana, on June 14th, at “Quinhentão” Hall, in Centro de Ciências da Saúde, na UFRJ, Ilha do Fundão, Rio de Janeiro.
The Lecture has the provocative title “!Maten a las ballenas!” Controversias y encrucijadas de la conservación biológica (“Kill the whales!” Controversies and crossroads of biological conservation), and its scope was to analyze the complex problematic of biological conservation in modern times. Professor Monjeau is an Ecologist and Ecophilosofer. He has a Doctor degree in Natural Sciences, post doc in Conservation Biology (U. Minnesota, USA). Formally specialized in Geographical Ecology, his present field of interest is the Philosophy of Ecology and how the different aspects of conservation express themselves in the terrain (Ecophilosophycal Cartography). Coordinator of the Ecophilosophy Program at Philosophy Department at Fundación Bariloche. Researcher at CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas – Argentina). Author of several publications and books. Editor of the book “Ecofilosofía”, with the contribution of many authors from Latin America countries. Consultant in environmental problems for UNESCO, PNUD, World Bank, FUNBIO, RedLac, European Union. Professor of post doc courses and lectures as Guest Professor at Universities in Latin America and Europe.
